The Case For Vinyl

Author: Jon Amor
www.jonamor.com

Ladies and gentlemen, the album as an art form is in serious danger.

As I spend these days slaving away with my guitar trying to find THAT chord progression, searching my soul for lyrical substance and trying to think of cool titles for my next album, I can't help thinking that the way forward is to write and record one song at a time and stick them on iTunes, one at a time.

Why? Because increasingly, the world's music-listening population is on a diet . It’s a bite-sized diet, and according to recent statistics (ok, believe them or not, but there’s no smoke without fire) the latest generation is apparently unable to sit and listen to a song from start to finish. The urge to ‘flick through’ one’s playlist is apparently too hard to resist, and the need for constant change in stimulation is reducing music to the same level of disposability as any daytime TV program on any of our hundreds of channels.

I still do not own an iPod or any kind of portable MP3 player. I have resisted it for years now, and my resistance is reminiscent of my stance in the late eighties and early nineties, when the Compact Disc was establishing itself in the market and condemning the vinyl LP to the land of the dinosaurs. The first CD was produced in 1982, and by 1985 the medium had established itself to such an extent that the days of vinyl were widely acknowledged as numbered. Stubborn as I am, I didn’t own a CD player until 1993, and that was only because my old record player gave up the ghost. I didn’t like compact discs; they were so SMALL. I was used to going out to PR Sounds in Devizes, flicking through the racks of vinyl which adorned the shelves like works of art, picking the album of my choice and carrying it home in a carrier bag specifically designed to accommodate a twelve inch record sleeve.

Once home, I would carefully remove the vinyl from the sleeve, place it respectfully on my turntable and, with no small degree of reverence, lower the needle onto the outer edge of the disc. As my speakers breathed the lengthy, warm sigh of a record revolving at 33rpm, I would sit back on my bed, open up the sleeve like a broadsheet newspaper in front of me and await the opening strains of the first song.Let me stress that point; I would listen to the opening strains of the first song. I didn’t really have an option – trying to position the needle between tracks two and three would have been a hazardous business.

One could miss the first few notes, or even worse end up scratching the record. Besides that, though, I didn’t want to skip to track 3. I wanted to listen to the album in its entirety from start to finish, with a brief interlude in the middle to turn over to side two, exactly as the artist would have wanted it to be heard. With the arrival of the compact disc, however, there came a new attitude towards music. The CD format allowed you not only to skip through tracks at the touch of a button, but actually change the running order of the songs with the ‘shuffle’ function. All of a sudden, that nice, chilled out track that the artist chose as the perfect way to close his latest collection of songs could very easily pop up right at the start.

And it gets worse. In the age before the compact disc, that music-obsessed teenager lounging on his bed, soaking up all the information on the album sleeve like a sponge, would glance back at the track listing at the start of every song to see what it was called. He’d be seduced by titles like JJ Cale’s “Super Blue”, baffled by Led Zeppelin’s “D’yer Mak’er” and faintly titillated by The Rolling Stones’ “Starfucker”. But with the arrival of the CD, songs were suddenly referred to by their track numbers, presumably as a result of the LED display on a car stereo. I once received an email from a fan who was extremely enthusiastic about my music, yet seemed incapable of remembering any of the titles – if, indeed, he’d ever bothered to see what they were.

“I have all three of your albums, Jon, “ he informed me, “ The second one is my favourite – I listen to it non-stop in the car! I especially love Track 5!”So, there we have it. Track 5 on the second one is his favourite. The iPod, to its credit, does at least have a format which accommodates song titles and album titles, so I guess that’s progress. And I will say this, ladies and gentlemen – I am acutely aware of the tendency of guys my age to look back at days gone by through rose-coloured spectacles, and remember things to be much better than they actually were. I’m also acutely aware that I’m full of crap, and it’s highly likely that I’d hate having to get up halfway through a record and turn it over. And no, I haven’t forgotten that vinyl records get scratched and jump right at the start of your favourite Angus Young guitar solo.

I am, however, perfectly willing to put my nostalgia to the test, so I have combed ebay and treated myself to an old-fashioned record player.
I’ll let you know how I get on.

Now, where did I put all my vinyl?

Review: Book; False Justice
Author: Mack Beasley
ISBN: 9781604744354
Publish America, Baltimore
$9.00
Pages: 146

Review Rating: 0 Stars

Every author, even if they do not realize it, creates a footprint- an archive in which they will be remembered, loved and yes, even hated.

I began reading “False Justice” by Mack Beasley, and like a trooper, I really wanted to look past the bad editing, run-on sentences, and try and keep up with the stories jumpy plot. There has to be a good story in here- even if the writing was horrible, maybe just maybe the story line was good.

Let me lay the theme of the story- the main character, Mike Blackman was a bad guy- trying to make a new start, he found God in prison and wanted to make amends for some of his past sins by helping his cell mate for ten plus years. (I can not give an exact number because the time changed at least twice within the first twenty pages.)

His cell mate was accused of killing someone that he says he didn’t do. And Mike was going to set out to prove, at the cost of maybe going back to prison himself- that he was innocent. The story jumps continuously, there is absolutely no flow of facts or time lines. Still, I really wanted to have something positive to say, maybe with some rewrites this could be great.

Mack Beasley the author and Mike Blackman the main character have some pretty coincidental parallels- Mike was a former alcoholic-so is Mack- Mike is in his sixties- so is Mack- Mike is a Christian- so is Mack- Mike lives in the South- Mack is from Alabama, and now lives in Georgia.

And than it happened, on page 23- these words were written,; “I get a cab and give the driver Sue Wilson’s address, I think he can understand English, but I’m not sure. We sure got a mix of people even in the south these days.” My throat filled with bile and horror- did I read that right? The book was about a “Christian” in whom has found God, wanted to make amends for his past sins, was willing to risk his own life, possibly go back to prison, all for the sake of redemption- I guess “racism” isn’t a sin according to his God? However I have very different believes- and with a quick snap of the book could no longer read another word.

Do I recommend this? No- in the Christian theme in which it was written, the sentence above left me disillusioned, and angry.- Did I finish the book? No. Will I? No again. Sorry Mack, I have no tolerance for racism.

When Your Youngest is Let Go from Child Care

Your Kid is Fired: What Parents Should Know
By Robin McClure

You describe your son as "high spirited." Others say he is out-of-control and a huge distraction in the classroom. Or maybe you think your daughter is sensitive and a little shy; teachers say she shrieks in the corner all day and won't interact with kids or adults. When a request for a conference comes, you learn the shocking news. Your child is being kicked out of child care at the center. Can child care providers do this? In a word: absolutely, and more are beginning to take these drastic steps to ensure the best quality environment for the majority of kids overall. What are some typical reasons cited for day care termination? Here is a listing of some of the more common factors.

· Your child's behavior is a consistent distraction to others, and other parents are complaining. All parents have the right to have their child in a positive environment that allows kids the ability to grow socially and academically, and be free from stress or bodily harm. A child who is literally out-of-control and is constantly exhibiting destructive behavior, hitting or in any way assaulting other children, or refusing to obey rules, is the prime reason for termination. Day care and in-home care settings do not have mandates for being required to care for a child who is a threat to him/herself and others. Child care providers must consider everyone's needs, and the happiness and overall family satisfaction in the care experience. And, sometimes, letting a discipline-problem child go is the right solution.

· Your child is not performing at the level required at a pre-school prep program. All parents think their child is gifted. However, kids learn at individual and unique levels, and a rigorous pre-school prep program is not right for every youngster. Parents should carefully consider their child's social and academic awareness before placing them in a prep environment. Some day cares and child care providers focus mainly on fun, social growth and basic skills. Others, however, cater to parents who are trying to ready their child to apply for a private school or be at the top of the class from day one. This means educators must adhere to a certain standard of academic expectations, and if your child simply won't complete the work, sit at a desk, work on assignments, or other tasks, and is constantly whining and distracting others, then another placement should be considered.

· Parents can be the source of the problem when it comes to ending a child care arrangement. The child may be absolutely adorable, but good looks and social charm do not pay the bills. Reasons commonly cited by providers for ending care include not paying on time, paying with insufficient funds, dropping kids too early or not picking them up until after designated times, and constant friction/disagreement over care. One provider laments that a family did not pick up a child until 10 p.m. on a Friday night, only to apologize that they didn't have care arrangements for an important business dinner, and "knew" the in-home provider would understand. She didn't. Another provider ended child care with a family because the parents would not allow her to transport the young daughter anywhere at any time, except in an emergency. This provider loads up kids (safely) in a van and takes them to a neighborhood park several times each week for outdoor play, weather permitting. The decision was made to end the arrangement.

· Disagreements over philosophies can result in ended child care arrangements. There is no "one" right way to raise children. Parents have lots of choices in care; providers typically list their requirements, philosophies, expectations, costs and times, certifications, and meal arrangements up front so that parents can make informed decisions. But sometimes, the match that seemed right at the time is all wrong and the arrangement needs to end. Parents who has very specific meal requirements for their child that do not work with the other kids, for example, is enough reason to end care. Food allergies are one thing, and are always considered by any reputable provider, but when a parent insists on the provider feeling a child broiled salmon once a week, however, or never to feed a child food that is frozen, that that may be beyond a reasonable expectation. In the event of the family seeking only fresh food and weekly salmon, it was kindly recommended that the family seek an in-home nanny who could provide custom gourmet meals.

· Families who take advantage of "drop and go" are often told "leave and go." It is very stressful for working parents to have a child who is sick. But child care providers typically do not have arrangements for sick children. (Some do, however, which parents should consider if this is an issue.) Some desperate families will try and mask a child's sickness and then leave quickly. This can afflict the otherwise healthy children with the sickness, and is unfair to all the other families

Review: Book; Demon
Author: Peter Mark May
ISBN: 9781843863984
http://www.pegasuspublishing.com/
£9.99
Pages: 349

Review Rating: 4 Stars!

Peter Mark May’s “Demon” is listed as Science Fiction / General Fiction/ Occult. They forgot however “Paranormal / Romance / Adventure.

The truth is, my personal reading choices do not run towards the Science Fiction categories, it is just not my thing. That being said however, I thoroughly enjoyed “Demon.”

Peter Mark May introduces us to Dela, Nathaniel, and Cerberus. The heroes battle against the forces of evil, and in particular; Ashmadi, which according to the book is the Hebrew word for the Demon Lord Ashmodaios. One of Satan’s three Arch-Lords or anti-Angels.

If scary books aren’t your thing- don’t worry- “Demon” as sinister as the title sounds is filled with romantic twists, hot sex scenes, humor and “Indiana Jones” like clues.

“Dela” the female hero in the story is sassy, beautiful and “Caribbean”- while Nathaniel, the intelligent, straight laced, King’s Paladin, is “Caucasian”. Few stories mix races, and I gave Peter an extra star for doing so!

Cerberus, is the King Paladin’s ‘Demon hunting dog” or is he?

“Demon” tells the tale of what might happen if Human DNA is scientifically mixed with Demon DNA- this book kept you engaged throughout with an interesting ending that by know means was predictable.

If you enjoy an exciting read- “Demon” is definitely for you!

Review:
CD: Unknown Soldier
Jon Amor
Boma Records
www.jonamor.com

Review Rating: 4 Stars!

I find myself at a lose for words (A first for me ~giggles!~) Jon has a unique style, his voice is husky and smooth, the kind of voice that gives girls shivers up her spine…but to put a ‘label’ on it so others can relate? I do not think I can- it is a mix of blues, rock and well…Jon!

I loved “In the Devil’s Back Yard” but was not crazy about “Ball and Chain” only to love “Unknown Soldier.” There are twelve songs on the CD- and 11 I either liked or loved—very good indeed, there is nothing I hate worse than buying a CD and discover there are only one or two songs on it I enjoyed- I could have downloaded those at a fraction of the cost!

Over all the CD is not only one that I will upload to my iPod- (okay minus Ball and Chain `smiles~) but will place in the “keep” pile!

My final recommendation: It is worth buying- yes the entire CD- and not just downloading a few songs off the internet!

PS- A nice surprise was the song “If you were me, and I were you”- check it out for yourself!

Can’t wait to hear your feedback regarding “Jon Amor’s Unknown Soldier”

Top 6 Ways to Save Gas While Traveling

Author: Erin Huffstetler
Are high gas prices putting a crimp in your travel plans? Ease the burden with these simple gas-saving tips:

1. Rely on Local Transportation
Choose a travel location that offers local transit, and take advantage of it. Exploring a new city by bus, subway or ferry allows you to see the town as locals see it, and even cuts out the hassle of parking – a bargain for the price of a few bus or subway tokens.

2. Rent a Bike
Why rent a car when you can rent a bike? Beach towns and many other tourist-focused areas offer low-cost bike rentals that make getting around town easy. Pick your bike of choice, and pedal around town at your own pace.

3. Seek Gas Card Offers
Many hotels have begun to offer free gas cards in an effort to offset the ever-increasing price of gas. Take advantage of such an offer, and you could find yourself cruising for free – or at least at a more reasonable price.

4. Foot It
Pick a pedestrian-friendly location, and put your feet to work. Densely populated cities and even many small towns are perfect for exploring on foot. Lace up those shoes, and explore all of the little nooks and crannies that you’d miss in a car.

5. Look for Shuttle Service
Staying at a big-name hotel? Check to see if they offer a complimentary shuttle service. This will allow you to skip driving all together, and net you a free tour guide – not a bad deal, indeed.

6. Choose an All-In-One Destination
Resorts and other all-in-one destinations completely erase the need for transportation once you arrive. Choose one of these vacation spots, and you'll have easy access to food, entertainment and everything else that you'd need to make your trip enjoyable.

SHOE TALK

Women's Flats - Tips for Making Flats Look Fabulous
Author: Desiree Stimpert

Many women have either vowed (subconsciously or otherwise) to only wear flats, while other women have banished them from their wardrobe entirely. While this decision often has to do with the height of the wearer, neither extreme is necessary - no matter how short or tall you are. Flats should have a place in every woman's wardrobe. If worn correctly, flat shoes can be as stylish and fun as their high-heeled counterparts, and they have the advantage of comfort that high heels will never beat. So, whether you're short, tall, or somewhere in between, give your feet a break every once in a while, and slip into a pair of comfortable flats. Use the following guidelines to be sure that your fashion-rating is high even when your heels aren't.

Look for Flats with Style
Since flats usually aren't as dynamic as heels, look for flats in fashionable colors, lush materials and rich textures to help jazz up your look without having to resort to higher heels. Accents like buckles, straps, gems or bows can also add a lot of interest to a pair of flats, although it's best not to go overboard with embellishments. When it comes to flats, a chic look is typically better than a quirky one, and it's a lot more versatile as well.
Dress Up Simple Flats for an Ultra-Feminine Look
To make up for the simple styling of many flats, consider prettying up your outfit with ultra-feminine wrap tops, flared sleeves and layered shirts to help convey a head to toe "ballerina" look.

Flats and Skirts
Having no heel on your shoes can make your legs appear shorter. If wearing flats with skirts, shoot for a hemline that is above the knee, to regain a look of length to your leg. Wearing flats with longer skirts can give you a dowdy appearance.
The Right Pants for The Shoes
Capri pants and flats are a match made in heaven, but if you're wearing long pants, make sure they aren't too long. Having the hem of your jeans or slacks drag the floor, not only looks sloppy, it's also a great way to ruin a pair of pants. Unless you're ultra-thin, you should avoid wearing really tight pants or skinny jeans with flats, as this can sometimes look frumpy and call attention to parts of your body you'd rather not emphasize. Instead, consider pairing flared or wide-legged pants with with pointed-toe flats for an ultra-stylish look.

What's Hiding Under Your Nailpolish?

Author: Dr Marybeth Crane
Email: crane {@ } faant. com

What's Hiding Under Your Nail Polish? My nails are thick, yellow and seem to have something growing underneath them. I'm not a dirty person, how did this happen? I get asked this question more times a week than I can count. Why do some people have nasty toe nails that look like little mountains of yellow, thick rock? Fungus is the most common culprit! And most women's answer is to cover it in toenail polish until it spreads and becomes painful. Men just wear closed toed shoes and hide the problem. Either way, this common infection is often ignored until it becomes a real pain in the toes!
Toe nail fungus strikes across class, ethnic, age and hygiene lines. In fact, one study showed that almost 50% of people over the age of 40 have experienced some type of toenail fungus. Fungal infections are incredibly common, but are more prevalent in athletes (due to chronic toenail trauma from shoes) and the aged or infirmed (due to a decreased immune response). The typical athlete's foot fungus, called a dermatophyte,is the same fungus that infects your toenails.

Fungus loves a moist, warm, dark environment, like in your shoes between your toes. The toenails can have a whitish, chalky superficial infection or a yellow to brown discoloration under the toenails that seems to eat and destroy the nail as it grows. Long standing fungal toenail look like thick, brownish-yellow mountains growing on the end of your toes. The thickness makes them painful and susceptible to a secondary bacterial infection.

This infection can be quite dangerous and has been linked to gangrene in diabetics. How is toenail fungus diagnosed? Diagnosis of toenail fungus, or onychomycosis, can only be made by a toenail biopsy. Your podiatrist can take a small piece of the leading nail and send it for a special stain that shows the fungus. A PAS stain is usually faster and more accurate than a fungal culture, because often the fungus does not grow in the laboratory. Do not assume you have onychomycosis. Psoriasis and other skin disorders as well as chronic trauma can look like fungus.

Also, a melanomaunder the nails can mimic fungus, but can be deadly if there is a delay in diagnosis. If you suspect you have toenail fungus, don't delay, see your podiatrist today!

How can I prevent toenail fungus?
1. If you get regular pedicures, bring your own instrumentsor go to a spa that sterilizes their instruments in anautoclave (like our in-office spa, Health Steps DFW).
2. Clean your toenail clippers with alcohol before you use them if you do your own toenails and make sure to replaceEmory boards and orange sticks regularly.
3. We also recommend you regularly clean your shoes witheither antibacterial spray like Lysol or even better anantibacterial with an antifungal like Mycomist (GordonLaboratories) at least once a month and dry them with ahairdryer.
4. Changing socks regularly (even a few times a day if youhave sweaty feet) and keeping your feet clean and dry isalso helpful.
5. Keep your athletic shoes dry and also change them regularly. If you exercise regularly, buy your athletic shoes a half size larger than your street shoes so you won't bash your toenails as your feet swell with exercise.

How is toenail fungus treated?

There is a lot of misinformation out there about toenail fungus. I have never told my patients to use white iodine, Vic's Vaporub or organic cornmeal soaks on their toes. There is no evidence I can find that it works (If you know of any scientific evidence please send it to me). Topical therapy should have some penetration of the nail plate like Formula 3 Tolnaftate oil (tetra Corp), Nailstat(Tripod Labs), or prescription (now generic Penlac) ciclopirox nail lacquer. This should be coupled with a nail treatment plan from your podiatrist. If this doesn't work after several months, oral medication, like terbinafine (generic Lamisil) or itraconazole (genericSporonox) may be needed. Remember, no matter how you treat fungal toenails, it takes at least 6 to 12 months for the toenails to grow out completely. A combination of oral and topical medication has the best long-term results, but still does not have a 100% cure rate. Relapse is also common, so it's important to play offense (treat the fungus) and defense (try to prevent the fungus) at the sametime.
Don't ignore nail fungus...it' s an infection, not just acosmetic problem!

Are Energy Drinks Potentially Harmful?

Author: Eugene Williams
Email: gwilliam12[@] yahoo. com

Energy drinks are a multi billion-dollar industry. It seems like you can't walk into a gym, health food store, and liquor store or by a vending machine without seeing some sort of "Pick me up" or energy related drink. This article talks about the potential risks or damage that these drinks may cause.

What Are The Ingredients?
-Caffeine, a very well known stimulant found in coffee, chocolates, and now in energy drinks. Caffeine may cause you to lose calcium through your urine. Caffeine has the potential to over stimulate the adrenal glands and this weakens them with persistent and chronic use, which causes fatigue.
-Sucrose is a sugar that is 50% glucose and 50% fructose. The sugar glucose is used as energy in every cell of our bodies. In contrast, fructose must be metabolized in the liver. Animals tested with large amounts of fructose developed fatty deposits in their livers, which resembled the damage cirrhosis does on a human beings liver. Fruit contains fructose and glucose, but they also contain fiber. On the other hand, commercialized sucrose doesn't have the fiber content of natural fruits.
*Here are potential risks for consuming processed sugar:-Sugar decreases growth hormones-Sugar feeds cancer cells-Sugar increases cholesterol levels-Sugar can cause drowsiness-Sugar contributes to diabetes. Our bodies change sugar 2 to 5 times faster into fat in the bloodstream than it does starch.
The list of potential risks for sugar consumption is actually greater than what is shown. Sucralose is a denatured sucrose, but its preparation involves chlorinating sucrose. Chlorine is a carcinogen. Thereby substituting three hydroxyl groups for three chlorine atoms increases the chances of coming down with cancer. In addition, Sodium Chloride is an ingredient that raises blood pressure. It can possibly harm the cardiovascular system. Also, it may increase the mass of the left ventricle, thickens and stiffens conduit arteries.
In summary, many of these energy drinks contain all if not several of the above ingredients. In addition, individuals that I know have told me that they feel a sudden crash a few hours after consuming these drinks and the "jitters"within the first few hours.

Review: The Olive Press
Location: 2322 Dundas Street West, Oakville ON

Review Rating: N/A

The Olive Press had only been open for a few days when I stopped by for dinner. I have made it a habit of not reviewing a restaurant on opening night, or within the first few weeks, as there are always ‘bugs’ to be worked out, and I feel this is not a far evaluation- a point that other food critics may argue.

The Olive Press however impressed me with their fare. It is run by the Daicos brothers Steven and Constantine, and while this is not a full review, it is definitely worth recommending.

I was happy to see a wonderful selection of wines including some Ontario greats such as Trius Merlot and Riesling. Of course no Italian restaurant would be complete without Italian wine, and I recommend the Ripassa, a wonderful red for a reasonable $42.95 per bottle.

The portions are large, and the food full of layered flavours—Rating: 5 out-of 5 stars!

The Olive Press is very reasonable priced, has a great atmosphere for families or couples. I have however chosen not to give The Olive Press a full rating- as the service needs to be smoother- and this will come with more practice.

I will be back soon- so stay tuned for a full upcoming review of The Olive Press- in the meantime I encourage you to give it a try, and I am looking forward to receiving your feedback.

Bon Appetite—Tilly!

CHEF TALK

The Veagn BBQ: Toufo Grilling Tips

Make sure your vegetarian or vegan barbecue menu includes some low-fat, high-protein, healthy and tasty tofu! Here are some quick tips to help you have the tastiest grilled tofu on the block. With these quick tofu tips, you'll be grilling like a pro!

Tofu Grilling Tips
· Tofu tends to stick to grills, so prepare your barbecue with a non-stick cooking spray or by rubbing it with oil.
· Use firm, or if possible, extra-firm tofu, and always press your tofu well before grilling.
· Marinate your tofu in your favorite marinade for at least 30 minutes before grilling. I like to marinate tofu in a zip lock bag in the refrigerator overnight.
· When marinating your tofu, even just a simple soy sauce, barbecue sauce, vinaigrette, or salad dressing will do the trick. A marinade containing a bit of sugar is best, as it will carmelize and help the tofu get nice and crispy and crunchy on the outside, so add a bit of sugar, rice wine vinegar, honey or maple syrup to your marinade.
· Use bamboo skewers rather than placing your tofu right on the grill.
· Grill over a pre-heated grill for 6-7 minutes on each side, brushing occasionally with extra marinade.

Enjoy your vegetarian or vegan barbecue, and be sure to throw some corn on the cob or veggie burgers on the grill as well! Looking for some barbecue tofu recipes? Here are two:

Sweet & Spicy BBQ Tofu

This recipe for Sweet and Spicy Barbecue Tofu has a bit of sugar and orange juice for sweetness, but gets a spicy kick from chili powder and red pepper. Tofu is always a healthy, low-fat and easy to grill item to bring along to a barbecue, and this easy vegetarian and vegan recipe is sure to be a hit!
Ingredients:
· 1 pound extra firm tofu, well pressed and sliced into 3/4 inch rectangles
· 3/4 cup barbeque sauce
· 3/4 cup brown sugar
· 1 tsp chili powder
· 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
· 3/4 cup orange juice concentrate
· salt and pepper to taste
Preparation:
Whisk together the barbecue sauce, sugar, chili powder, pepper and orange juice over medium low heat until well combined, about 3 minutes.
Place the barbecue sauce mixture in a wide flat dish, and place the tofu in the sauce, coating both sides well. Allow to marinate for at least two hours.
Grill for 4 or 5 minutes on each side, brushing with additional sauce.
Sprinkle with salt and pepper just before serving.

Featuring: Jon Amor

From Illuminating to Soul-Destroying, Returning to Intoxicating.
It must be Rock and Roll!

Featuring: Jon Amor

Jon Amor, former member of the UK band “The Hoax” stepped out on his own, surprising everyone with how quickly he was a success. Including himself. In a recent interview Jon said that the only person he’s proved wrong consistently in his career was himself. That self doubt was his biggest career battle.

“Just before my first ever solo show in 2005 - a truly scary experience when you're used to having loud amps and drums behind you – I was pretty nervous-and the most recent nervous experience was last November (2007) just before my first solo show in Canada. I was opening for David Gogo in a beautiful theatre just outside Edmonton, Alberta, it was a sold-out show, and as I stood in the wings preparing to go on, my heart was pounding and my good old self-doubt was nagging away... "Can I really do this?" But the audience was fantastically welcoming and gave me a standing ovation at the end - it's a gig I will never forget.”

Fans of this Devizes UK resident however would never know that from time to time Jon battles within himself. At the age of 15 he picked up his brothers acoustic guitar. At first it was a love / hate relationship until he found his passion. “My first big influence as a guitarist was Mark Knopfler from Dire Straits. I bought the Brothers In Arms album first, then worked my way back through their catalogue and found myself far more drawn to the early stuff, which was much more rootsy and bluesy. From there I got into people like JJ Cale, Eric Clapton, and through them I got into the old blues greats like Buddy Guy and BB King. My guitar style is a mix of all those guys, with a healthy helping of Stevie Ray and Jimmie Vaughan.”

When asked if he has any special ladies in his life, he teases ‘My mum of course,” but with those startling blue eyes of his, and soft raspy voice the women are swarming. I asked him if the saying “sex, drugs and rock and roll” was true? He commented “I spent all my twenties touring around the UK, Europe and the USA with The Hoax, but to be perfectly honest we were a pretty clean living band! We barely drank, were far too focused, busy or tired to spend that much time chasing girls, and drugs have never been a part of my life. However, when that band broke up I resolved to have a bit more fun on the road, and I have to say, as a result of that decision, my thirties have been the best years of my life! So, drugs? - Not for me. Sex and rock and roll? Most definitely! Bring them on in equal measures!”

I asked Jon if the business aspect of his career has influenced him at all and he states “There's a lot of bullshit you have to wade through, but eventually you wise up to it and realize that when someone in the industry comes to a gig and says "Hey, you guys ROCK! I LOVE your music!" it doesn't mean he's going to sign you for a million pounds, and when someone at your label says "We are right behind you guys with this album!" they're probably lying. Once you figure that out, and just keep trying to enjoy your music regardless, it gets a lot easier.”

Jon writes his own music, and is currently working on his 4th release. His music has a raspy blues feel to it, and he has toured all over the UK, and most recently made his way ‘over the pond’ to perform in Canada.

For the thousands of people attending the Ottawa Bluesfest and Thunder Bay Blues Festival this July, you will have an opportunity to see Jon perform. If you can’t wait, you can go to his My Space page and listen to four of his tracks, including “The Devil’s Backyard.” (www.myspace.com/jonamormusic)
